Creating a True Pollinator Garden for Backyard Beehives 🐝🌿
One of my favorite recent projects started with a very simple but important realization: if you’re going to keep bees, you also need to give them something to forage on.
My client had recently installed beehives in his backyard at his urban home here in Florida. The property was mostly turf grass with very few flowering plants or pollinator resources nearby. While the hives themselves were beautiful, the surrounding landscape simply wasn’t supporting the bees in the way it could.
So we created a dedicated pollinator garden specifically designed to support the hives.
A Small Space Can Make a Big Difference
The planting area itself was only about 10x10 feet, tucked beside the beehives, but it proves that you do not need a massive garden to create meaningful habitat for pollinators.
The goal was to provide:
Continuous nectar sources
A mix of flower shapes and bloom times
Heat-tolerant plants for Florida summers
Low-maintenance plants that would thrive long term
We selected a combination of flowering shrubs, natives, and pollinator favorites that would provide both beauty and function.
The Plant Palette
Tea Bush Native
A Florida native shrub that produces small flowers pollinators love while fitting beautifully into a naturalistic planting design.
Blue Plumbago
One of my favorite Florida shrubs for pollinators. Its soft blue flowers bloom heavily through the warmer months and constantly attract butterflies and bees.
Blanket Flower (Gaillardia)
A tough native wildflower that thrives in Florida heat while providing bright color and excellent nectar sources.
Panama Rose
This plant flowers almost nonstop in warm weather and quickly became one of the busiest spots in the garden for pollinator activity.
Duranta (Golden Dew Drop)
A pollinator magnet with purple flowers that bees absolutely covered almost immediately after planting.
Pentas
One of the best easy-care flowering plants for attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in Florida landscapes.
Blue Mistflower
An incredible pollinator plant that butterflies especially love. It adds softness and movement to the planting while supporting beneficial insects.
Two Months Later… The Bees Are Thriving
Only two months after installation, the transformation has been incredible.
The client recently told me the bees are noticeably more active, happier, and already producing honey successfully. The garden is constantly buzzing with activity, filled not only with honeybees but also butterflies and native pollinators.
What I love most about this project is that it demonstrates how landscaping can directly support the environment in a functional and beautiful way.
Pollinator gardens do not have to be large, wild, or complicated. Even a small intentional planting can create a meaningful food source and habitat for wildlife—especially in urban areas where pollinator resources are often limited.
Landscaping With Purpose
This project is a perfect example of why I love Florida-Friendly Landscaping so much. Every plant chosen had a purpose. Instead of simply filling space, the landscape now actively supports life.
The result is not only beautiful for the homeowner, but beneficial for the ecosystem around it.
And honestly… hearing that the bees are thriving and producing honey may be one of the sweetest project updates I’ve ever received. 🍯🐝
Always keep growing. 🌿
